FASTING GLUCOSE LEVELS IN TYPE 2 DIABETES

Fasting glucose levels determined by a balance between the utilization of glucose by peripheral tissues and hepatic glucose production. In the nondiabetic state primary fasting insulin level is sufficient to suppress hepatic glucose production and maintain glucose levels within normal limits.

However, type II diabetes insulin levels is not sufficient to suppress glucose production by the liver, which increases at later stages of the progression of diabetes and is the main determinant of fasting hyperglycemia.

Thus, in advanced stages of development of type II diabetes insulin resistance, insulin deficiency and increased production of glucose by the liver - they all play a role in the maintenance and preservation of hyperglycemia.
