SCHISTOSOMIASIS
Schistosomiasis is a disease caused by schistosomes and is considered to be the most important human infection in terms of global mortality. More than 200 million people worldwide are affected and over 250,000 deaths occur annually (Cardoso et al, 2008). The chronic form of this disease leads to spleen and liver damage and eventually death. The need to control this deadly disease is great. Current prevention methods are often ineffective due to the lack of sanitary conditions and the increased breeding grounds for the snail intermediate host. The image below depicts the typical life cycle for these parasites.
